Sent home for not wearing heels

Nicola Thorp, a London receptionist was sent home without pay after refusing to wear heels at work.

Outsourcing firm Portico Corporate Reception Management Limited, by which Ms Thorp was employed, stated that their dress guidelines, "ensure customer-facing staff are consistently well presented and positively represent a client's brand and image."

Although employers are permitted to implement reasonable dress codes at work, the requirement for women to wear heels does raise equality issues. A company's policy must be objectively justified to avoid falling foul of indirect discrimination.
